A few customers have been struggling with some sort of root rot problem. These are experienced growers who have had many many crops and are baffled by this new variable.

The problem is characterized by the roots doing great until the second week of bloom, and then around that point they turn brown and start disintegrating. They smell musty, like a dirty aquarium. A few of the less hardy plants wilt. Others begin yellowing. While the harvest is not entirely ruined, it is not close to what had been expected or hoped for. Until we know for sure what the problem is, here is the advice i have given:

  1. While a small, hobby grower might be able to do just fine without a chiller, i would advise any professional grower to Use a water chiller. Get the reservoir temperature down to 68 degrees. Plants can handle even cooler temps that that, but they are not able to take up as much nutrient. Warmer temperatures encourage pathogens. I would say that any reservoir above 72 degrees is just asking for problems.
  2. Control those fungus gnats! Even though the damage fungus gnats can do seems microscopic and not very important, their tiny size is misleading. Fungus gnat larvae do damage roots, and they provide wounds in the roots for pathogens to enter the plants' vascular systems. We suggest the use of gnatrol and can special order it for you.
  3. Innoculate the plants with beneficials
  4. Use an enzyme product throughout the cycle - i suggest Hygrozyme - i really do think it is the best product on the market.
  5. Make sure those roots have plenty of airation
  6. Silica would be a good choice for addition to the nutrient routine to strengthen cell walls.
